About

The Lovers of the River Almonda is an interactive and participatory art installation created by artist and designer Luigi Ferrara in collaboration with photographer Voitek Pendrak. It has been commissioned by Renova, a global provider of paper consumption goods whose headquarters are located by the river Almonda in Torres Novas, Portugal.

In this work, the public is invited to pose for a photograph as lovers within an artificial tableau of a riverbank shaded by trees made from Renova paper. A customized love poem is created for the participants by the artist based on a series of questions that he asks them. The poetry and photography are combined and projected during Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2015.

The art installation generates photographs and poems, which are shared with the public. The shared fragments spread the experience beyond the timeframe of the event. The work underlines the “infinite risk” that love presents humanity by asking people to publicly declare their intimate love through their presence in the piece. Participants are left with a customized product, which includes the poem and photograph that captures their participation in the overall work.

Since 2013, Renova has commissioned an exciting new art exhibit for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche made with their signature coloured paper working in collaboration with artist/designer Luigi Ferrara.

An all-night free event

This new exhibit will be featured at Scotiabank Nuit Blanche on October 3rd, 2015 in Toronto—an annual, free, all-night contemporary art event that is also held in cities around the world.

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2014: The Garden of Renova

The Garden of Renova was a geometrically intricate garden of flowers, topiary, and garden muses made with 15,000 rolls of Renova paper that represented the ideals of Repose, Reflection, Reimagination, and Renewal. Each muse wore a different outfit, also made from the paper, that came to life in augmented reality when viewed through tablet devices. The installation was cited as one of the Top 3 installations of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche by the Toronto Star and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2013: World House Renova

World House Renova was a sculptural instsallation in the form of a surreal and miniaturized modular home. It incorporated Renova coloured paper into 5 unique curated artworks that populated the home. This pavilion was awarded a silver prize for innovation at IDEX Canada in 2013 and a gold prize at the Interior Design Show.
